Dialogues
A. What Do You Think of This Letter?
George and Jack are good friends. George is looking for a job. He has just written an application letter but he does not feel satisfied with it. Now he asks for Jack's advice.
George: Hello, Jack, would you please read my application letter? I'd like to have your opinion.
Jack: I'd be glad to tell you what I think.
George: If you don't think it's any good, please say so. I really want to get this job.
Jack: Well, it looks fine to me. But I have one suggestion.
George: Good! I'm interested in your advice.
Jack: I think you should write about your education first.
George: Good idea, Jack. What do you think of the second part?
Jack: I think it's too short. You should include much more information about your work experience.
George: You are right. I'll revise it.
B. Do You Think the End Is All Right?
Now, George and Jack are discussing the last part of the application letter. George accepts Jack's suggestions whole-heartedly.
George: How do you feel about the last part of the letter?
Jack: The last part is very good. But perhaps you should say something about your family, too.
George: I agree. I appreciate your help, Jack. Do you think the end is all right?
Jack: Oh, yes, George. But you'd better end the letter with "Sincerely", not "Very truly yours".
George: I guess I should tear up the letter and start over again.
Jack: Oh, don't do that, George! Just make the few changes and your letter will be perfect.
George: Thank you very much indeed, Jack.
Jack: It's my pleasure. Good luck.
Passage An Application Letter
May 15,1996
Dear sirs,
I have just seen your advertisement in Binhai Daily of the 10th May for a salesman in the Electronic Appliance Section of your company. I'm very interested in the job and I feel I'm qualified to meet the requirements. I'm therefore enclosing a resume together with references from my supervisor and the director of the Electronics Department of my university respectively.
As you can see, I once worked in the Electronics Department. So I am familiar with different kinds of electronic appliances. As for the academic qualification, I'll graduate soon from the Management School and I have obtained good skills in advertising and marketing. I have worked more than once as a salesman in some stores during my previous vacations. Besides, I'm very patient and friendly in nature. I'm confident that I shall be suitable for the kind of work.
If you need any further information, I shall be very pleased to supply it. Or I wonder if you will grant me with an interview.
I'm looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours faithfully,
Wang Dong
