For the first time in many years, an old man travelled from his rural town to the city to attend a movie. After buying his ticket, he stopped at the concession stand to purchase some popcorn.

Handing the attendant $1.50, he couldn’t help but comment, “The last time I came to the movies, popcorn was only 15 cents.”

“Well, sir,” the attendant replied with a grin, “You’re really going to enjoy yourself. We have sound now.”

多年来第一次看电影的老人从村镇来到城里看电影。买完票以后，他来到小吃摊前买些爆米花。

【词汇讲解】

1.rural 农村的。与之对应的“城市的”就是urban。常常在新闻报纸上提到的农村地区就是 rural area。

2.attend。attend a movie是固定搭配，就是“看电影”的意思。类似的还有attend school上学，attend church上教堂做礼拜，attend a wedding出席婚礼。

3.concession stand。stand在这里不是动词，而是名词“售货处”的意思。

4.purchase意思是购买，常常可与buy通用，但它是较为正式的用语，常用于比较重要的场合。它可指以任何方式购买到东西；例如： They have purchased much furniture. 他们买了不少家具。 This country has purchased large supplies of rice from China．这个国家向中国购买了大批大米。
