So in many ways sleep is the primary activity in the developing brain

Also it's important to recognize

that across species is important during early development

Sleep is more important in early development

whether you are talking about puppies, kittens

baby monkeys, human infants or drosophila

Periods of brain development and early development

are associated with greater need for sleep

that's not just rest actually operationalize as sleep

and I'm gonna get to the differences in a moment

Finally, one more the framing issue

before I dive into the adolescents story again

is this idea that sleep is intertwined

with multiple regulatory systems

particularly from the developmental perspective

It's not just going to sleep

it's sleep-arousal regulation

and that's intertwined with sleep and temperature regulation

sleep and metabolic regulation

sleep and circadian regulation

and sleep and emotion regulation

The earlier you go into development

the more intertwined these systems are

including the social contexts

that set the stage for these

But I want to highlight one other issue

about the framework for thinking about sleep

Again, I'm just gonna do this conceptual

almost metaphorical level for a moment

And I'll come back later to

how this maybe operationalize empirical studies

It's part of what I think governs the mystery of sleep that

you know, sleep is ubiquitous across species

is necessary for life

Animals can't even survive without sleep

and yet the actual function and purpose of sleep is still relatively unknown

In order to really zoom in on that

it's important to highlight the difference between sleep and rest

because rest is not sleep

and it's interesting to think about what the difference is
