Dialogue 1
Jingjing: Mark, may I ask you a personal question?
Mark: You may ask.
Jingjing: OK. Do you think you're a humble person?
Mark: Isn't that kind of a catch-22? Anyway, I'd want to know why you're asking before I answer.
Jingjing: Well, I've been asking a lot of people these past few days. I just want to get a read on the people I know.
Mark: And you get that by directly asking if someone thinks of themselves as modest?
Jingjing: Humble.
Mark: Right. Well, I don't think I'm especially humble. I should be more humble, and not too proud or self-centered.
Jingjing: That's a good answer.
Mark: Phew! I was nervous there for a minute. What did other people say?
Jingjing: Some people said they were very humble, and said they wished the people around them weren't so proud. Others said they were a bit too proud sometimes, about some things they do well.
Mark: At least they admit to being proud. What do you think? Doesn't someone deserve to be proud after they've gotten to be very good at something?
Jingjing: Maybe, but it's probably better if they aren't full of themselves.
Mark: What do you think are some ways to stay modest and humble?
Jingjing: A person could make a list of the things they regret. That would be a reminder that they're not perfect. It might also help them to avoid those same kinds of mistakes in the future.
Mark: That's a good idea. I'm going to make that list when I get home!

Dialogue 2
Jingjing: Mark, did you make that list?
Mark: I did. I'm sure it's not complete. I don't want to show it to anyone, though.
Jingjing: Good on you! Yeah, I wouldn't expect to see it. That's for yourself.
Mark: A bit of self-criticism every day, eh?
Jingjing: Yeah, that's the idea. I have one too.
Mark: Well, it's the height of modesty only to recommend others to do things you've actually done.
Jingjing: I agree. Hey, check out these quotes about modesty I've found on a website.
Mark: Any good ones?
Jingjing: Here's one from William Shakespeare. It says “Lord Bacon told Sir Edward Coke when he was boasting, The less you speak of your greatness, the more I shall think of it.”
Mark: That's a good reason to be humble. Any others?
Jingjing: Let's see. Winston Churchill said “He is a modest little man who has a good deal to be modest about.”
Mark: Right. Modesty in itself might not be that valuable. Which one is your favorite?
Jingjing: Well, I don't know how to pronounce this name. Have a look.
Mark: François de La Rochefoucauld
Jingjing: OK. “The height of cleverness is being able to conceal it.”
Mark: I like that one too. Good finds, Jingjing!
