Russia’s Vladimir Putin announces ‘military operation’ in Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced Thursday a military operation in Ukraine to defend separatists in the east of the country.

“I have made the decision of a military operation,” he said in a surprise statement on television shortly before 6am Moscow time. Separatists in Ukraine earlier had asked Moscow to help repel “aggression”.

Hours after the breakaway regions issued their plea, at least five explosions were heard in the separatist-held eastern Ukraine city of Donetsk on Thursday morning, a Reuters witness said. Four military trucks were seen heading to the scene.

The United States warned everything is in place for a major attack by Russia on its neighbour.
