Iran has reiterated its long-held position that it does not seek to develop nuclear weapons and its nuclear programme was being developed for energy generating purposes only.
Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Hasan Qashqavi said on Monday that Iran had always been in favour of non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, particularly in the Middle East.
"It is clear that Iran does not have any nuclear weapons. Everybody knows that Iran has always been in favour of non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and views this as a strategy to change the world. The biggest change in the world will be realised if we have a world and a Middle East which is free from weapons of mass destruction."
Meanwhile, he emphasized that Iran has the right under the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty to develop reactor fuel using uranium enrichment for peaceful purposes.
The United States and some of its allies accuse Iran of seeking to build a nuclear weapon, a claim Tehran has long-denied.
Last week, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad sent a congratulation letter to Obama on his win, the first time an Iranian leader has offered such wishes to a US president-Elect since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
