Possible "God Particle" discovered
Scientists in Geneva say they have discovered a new particle consistent with the God Particle, officially known as Higgs Boson.
The particle has been the subject of a 45-year hunt to explain what gives all matter in the universe size and shape.
The "Higgs boson" is thought to be the missing piece of the fundamental theory of physics known as the Standard Model.
The announcement is set to take scientists nearer to understanding how the Big Bang at the dawn of time gave rise to stars, planets and even life.
Chinese policemen honored for foiling hijacking attempt
Two police officers have received high awards for their efforts in foiling a hijacking attempt in northwest China's Xinjiang last Friday.
Officers Lu Maopeng and Turghun Rozeniyaz from the Hotan prefecture were given the second-rank law enforcement heroism medal.
The two were on a plane heading to the regional capital Urumqi when six armed men broke into the cockpit and tried to bring down the plane.
They and three other officers took action, overwhelming the hijackers with the help of the crew and passengers.
Cuban leader visits China
Cuban leader Raul Castro is now in Beijing for a 4-day visit to China.
Raul, President of Cuba's Council of State and the Council of Ministers, is set to hold talks with top Chinese officials.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry says the visit will further promote the development of China-Cuba relations.
China to miss upcoming Syria meeting
China says its sticking with its policy on Syria and won't be attend the upcoming "Friends of Syria" meeting.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry says it is urgent for the international community to implement the decision made at the Geneva meeting last month.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said that Russia will not be attending the meeting in Paris this week either.
The two countries missed the last two Friends of Syria meetings earlier this year.
Turkey finds bodies of pilots down by Syria
Turkey has found the bodies of the two pilots of the fighter jet shot down by Syria two weeks ago.
Military authorities say they found the bodies in the eastern Mediterranean.
Turkey claims the plane was shot in international airspace.
But Damascus rejects the claim, saying the Turkish jet flew at an altitude of 100 meters within Syrian airspace.
Turkey deployed missile batteries, tanks and troops to its border with Syria following the incident.
Nato wants more active dialogue with China
Nato Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen says Nato should have more active dialogue with China.
Rasmussen says Nato needs to better understand China and define areas where the two can work together.
Rasmussen also says that as the economies of NATO nations are globalized, the approach to security has to be globalized too.
100,000 Chinese children adopted by foreigners in 30 years
China's Minister of Civil Affairs says over 100-thousand Chinese-born orphans and children with physical disabilities have been adopted by parents from other countries over the past three decades.
Li Liguo says China has adoption agreements with nearly 140 governments and children's organizations around the world.
The Civil Affairs minister also says that finding a family for the children is not the end of the government's work.
US regional bases within reach of Iran's missiles: Iranian commander
A senior Iranian army commander says all U.S. bases in the Persian Gulf and Sea of Oman are within the reach of Iran's missiles.
Amir Ali Hajizadeh, aerospace division commander in the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard, says some of Iran's missiles could reach as far as 2-thousand kilometers.
The IRGC commander made the comments following three days of missile testing.
Hostage drama ends with discovery of five bodies, including gunman
In southern Germany, an attempt to evict the owner of a foreclosed apartment has left 5 people dead.
When police stormed the apartment in the southern German city of Karlsruhe, the 53-year-old gunman and the victims were already dead.
The owner of the apartment, the gunman's girlfriend, had fallen behind on payments. When a bailiff, a locksmith, and a social worker showed up to evict her from the apartment, the the gunman opened the door and ushered them in.
Two of them were later killed during the incident along with the gunman's partner.
Road accident kills 10 in south Chile
At least 10 people were killed and 20 injured on Wednesday in a road crash involving a passenger bus and lumber truck in Chile's Bio-Bio region.
The accident occurred close to noon in the heavily forested area near the town of Canete, in Arauco province, around 700 km south of the capital Santiago.
Nine people died on the scene and a tenth on the way to hospital.
Three killed in helicopter crash in Russia's Eastern Siberia
Three people died in a helicopter crash in Russia's Eastern Siberian Republic of Sakha on Wednesday.
The small AS-350 helicopter was en-route to the town of Bratsk in Southern Siberia to Tolokan village in Sakha.
The cause of the crash has not yet been discovered.
The service was operated by UT-air, which has the largest fleet of helicopters in Russia. The company has lost two planes and four helicopters in six accidents since 2007, resulting in the deaths of 49 people.
