Victorians are being warned smoke will continue to affect air quality across the state, despite rain and cooler weather helping ease the immediate fire threat in bushfire zones. There are 21 fires burning across Victoria, with one emergency warning in place for communities near Mount Hotham, in the North East. The state government will lift the state of disaster order from midnight, as milder conditions are forecast for the next 10 days.
And in New South Wales the Rural Fire Service is looking forward to a week of milder weather after making it through yesterday's difficult fire conditions. No homes have been destroyed or damaged last night despite a mega fire forming in the Snowy Mountains and all fires have now been downgraded to "Advice Level".
The US government has announced details of new economic sanctions on Iran following missile attacks on two bases in Iraq. US Secretary of the Treasury Steve Mnuchin says manufacturing, textiles and mining will be affected — cutting off billions of dollars to the Iranian regime.
And in tennis, Spain has won through to the Semi Finals of the ATP Cup, where it will take on Australia later tonight. The Spanish beat Belgium two-rubbers-to-one in last night's quarter final in Sydney.
