NPC deputies,or "quan guo ren da dai biao," are lawmakers. They are members of the highest organ of state power in China, the National People's Congress, or NPC. So how are NPC deputies chosen? Well, they are elected by people's congresses in provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the central government. The armed forces select their own deputies. And deputies from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan follow separate rules by the NPC. CPPCC members, or "zheng xie wei yuan" are the political advisors, they belong to the country's political advisory body, the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, known as CPPCC. Its members come from all walks of life and they are selected through consultation and recommendations. The body also has some star power, that's why you can see some familiar faces among its members, including actor Jackie Chan and former NBA star,Yao Ming. Both NPC deputies and CPPCC members play important roles in China's political life. Each year they shoulder heavy responsibilities and together they draw the blueprint for the country's development.
