U.S. Defense officials say they are worried about an inside attack or threat from service members involved in securing President-elect Joe Biden's inauguration. The FBI is vetting all 25,000 National Guard troops who are coming to Washington for the event.
Some state capitols are closed and have added police and National Guard patrols, following the US Capitol attack. There are concerns about protests and possible violence leading up to the inauguration, but demonstrations on Sunday were relatively small.
Dozens of people are known dead after a magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck Indonesia on Friday. Many more were injured and thousands were left homeless.
Russian opposition leader Alexi Navalny flew from Germany to Moscow and was quickly arrested. Navalny had spent five months in Germany recovering from a poisoning, which he blames on Russia's government.
