6. Luck: Wings for a Running Horse

（提出话题）The way to success has long been a topic under heated discussion in human society. （引语观点）While some attribute success to good luck, others hold that hard work is the only way to success and luck has nothing to do with it. （我的观点）Personally, I deem that both sides go to the extreme. Actually both diligence and luck play a role in a person’s success, though the former weighs much heavier than the latter.
（让步）Admittedly, hard work is indispensable in most people’s success. How could Madam Curie and her husband have succeeded in discovering the element radium without continuous labor? Similarly, how could Mao Zedong have successfully figured out the way to defeat his enemies without the numerous nights spent on books and meetings?
（反驳 ＋ 我的论据）However, luck does also have a role to play in a person’s success. If Madam Curie and her husband had not had happened to go to the laboratory late that night, they might well have missed the chance to discover the element. If Mao had been assassinated by his rivalries, as was American president John F. Kennedy and Abraham Lincoln, he would not have become what he was in Chinese history.
（总结）To sum up, we may safely say that both hard work and good luck contribute to a person’s success. Without the foundation laid through hard work, one would only sigh before good luck, and with good luck one can go faster and safer on his way to success. Good luck is to a hardworking man what wings are to a running horse. So just get running and seize your good luck!

（描述现象）The past few years have witnessed a mounting number of people getting wronged when helping others.（举例论证） Taking a look around, one can find examples too many to enumerate. The most typical case in point might be the man from Nanjing who helped an old lady but was penalized by law. （引语观点）Therefore, some people warn those warmhearted by citing the saying “everyone is for himself and God is for everyone.” （我的观点）Personally, I disagree with them. I hold that we should care about people around us and help each other.
（我的论据）The reason is self-evident: everyone will one day meet trouble. When our own capacity is not strong enough to pull ourselves out of the trouble, we might only say die if no one came to help us. As a matter of fact, numerous examples can be given as illustrations. The most recent one might be what happed in Zhaoyuan, Shandong. It was just because of the indifference of those onlookers that the young lady became the victim of the violence attack. Had anyone present offered her a hand, the tragedy might well have been prevented.
（我的做法）Personally, I will care about people around me, whether I know them or not, because I believe that it is love that makes the world go around. I will offer my help to any innocent person in trouble. What’s more, I will also show my care to those so-called “bad guys”, helping them come back to the right road. Only in this way can we expect a harmonious society.
（二）图画型
1.
（描述图画）This is a satiric but true-to-life drawing. As we can see in it, a man is sweating, with his hand on his chest and a regretful and painful expression on his face. The words above him should be his monologue, which goes, “Shit. I’ve forgotten to take a photo of the Starbuck coffee that I’ve just had. Then what did I drink it for?”
（点明寓意）Ridiculous as it might seem, the phenomenon mirrored by the cartoon is not uncommon in modern society. Actually, both the picture and instances in real life point to the fact that many people nowadays make too much a point of showing off their life experiences online, by such channel as weibo (micro blog) and weixin (WeChat).（举例论证）It is never too rare to see some people taking pictures of newly served dishes in a restaurant and upload them to their friend circle. Nor is it to find people busy taking photos and update their micro blogs when touring. Some even dine or tour merely for the purpose of showing off, just as the person in the picture does. Their only goal seems to be attracting as much attention online as possible.
（提出建议）Such being the case, it is high time that we pondered over the problem and figured out a solution. Among all measures, I believe, the central one should be resisting the temptation of vanity brought along by such modern media as micro blog and WeChat, and coming more back to life itself.
2. My View on Plastic Surgery
（描述图画）This is a wittily designed photo. As we can see in it, a handsome husband and an attractive wife are taking a family picture with their three kids, whom look just opposite to their parents in their looking. The caption reads, “What you only need to worry about is how to explain it to your kids”.
（点明寓意）Apparently, this picture is meant to reveal the surging trend of plastic surgery. Taking a look around, one can find examples too many to enumerate.（指出有争议）To this practice, people’s attitudes differ considerably. Some embrace it readily whereas others criticize and even condemn it harshly. （我的观点）Personally, I am inclined to agree with the latter and I base my position on the following reasons.
（分析原因）In the first place, I deem that physical appearances are always of less great importance than inner beauty and practical ability. In the second place, I am definitely opposed to the concept that there is an established norm of beauty. Instead, I hold that beauty, even in the physical sense, manifests itself in varied ways. Last but not least, as is well known, plastic surgery can be very dangerous, resulting in some irreversible injuries.
（总结）Taking into consideration all the above-mentioned, we may safely come to the conclusion that plastic surgery is definitely unnecessary for normal people. （建议）We should focus more on our inner world and try to attract others with our personality and intelligence.
3. Perseverance: Key to Success
（描述图画）This is a wittily designed and inspiring picture. As it shows, is searching for water. He has already dug many holes in the ground but none of them has reached the water. In fact, the water is just a few inches below the bottom of one of the holes. With a cigarette between his lips and his spade in his hands, he walks away leisurely, saying to himself in mind that there is no water here and I shall try another place.
（点明寓意）Simple as the picture is, the message it conveys is profound and far-reaching. Obviously, it is meant to tell us about the importance of perseverance on our way to success. There is no denying the fact that nowadays an increasing number of youth lack the spirit of persisting on. （举例论证）A case in point is that many of them change their jobs or careers too frequently. Faced with a bit setback or difficulty, they choose to quit and change their goals. （分析影响）If the situation goes as it is, the consequence will be disastrous not only for individuals but for the society as a whole.
（总结 + 建议）Bringing what has been discussed into a conclusion, we may say that the lack of perseverance is a major barrier on our way to success. In a word, we should truly understand the profound meaning of the picture and try various means to cultivate our perseverance.
（三）图表型
1.
（描述图表）The past years have witnessed a mounting number of Chinese scholars returning from overseas. As is lively illustrated by the column chart, the number of returnees climbed from a mere 69.3 thousand in 2008 to over 272.9 thousand in 2012, at an annual increase rate of around 50%.
（分析原因）A multitude of factors may have led to the tendency revealed by the chart, but the following are the critical ones from my perspective. First and foremost, along with the development of Chinese economy and society, the number of Chinese studying abroad has been soaring in the past years, which has provided an expanding base for the number of returnees. In the second place, the government has enacted a series of preferential policies to attract overseas Chinese scholars back home. Last but not least, the booming economy, science and technology in this country have generated more attractive job opportunities for scholars returning from overseas.
（分析影响）The waves of returnees will definitely contribute to this nation’s development, since they have brought back not only advanced science and technology but also pioneering concepts of education and management. （展望未来）With more scholars coming back from overseas, and with the concerted efforts of the whole nation, we have reasons to expect a faster rejuvenation of this country.

（描述图表）The past years have witnessed a mounting number of Chinese college students taking part-time jobs. Yet attitudes differ considerably among students as to the necessity of doing so. As is lively illustrated by the pie chart, around 50% of all students in a college believe that it is necessary or of utmost necessity to take part-time jobs, while the other half holds that it is absolutely unnecessary or just dispensable.
（我的观点和原因）Personally, I maintain that taking part-time jobs does have benefits for many students, but it is not necessary for everyone. On the one hand, for students intending to work in society after graduation, taking part-time jobs is beneficial, for it can provide them with opportunities to learn about society and prepare themselves for their future jobs. Besides, for students under severe financial burden, taking part-time jobs is also an advisable choice. On the other hand, for students who plan to further their study, it is not a must for them to spend time on part-time jobs. As is well known, for this reason or that, it is rather hard for undergraduates to land a part-time job closely related with what they learn in school. Such being the case, it might well prove a waste of time for students to get involved in part-time jobs.
(总结建议)To sum up, students should make a sound choice about taking part-time jobs according to their own conditions. In other words, they should not follow others blindly.
