Some social scientists argue that a high EQ stands for a person's ability to survive. They suggest a link between EQ, IQ, genetics and the environment. They note that Charles Darwin, the 19th century scientist observed that, "The biggest, the smartest, and the strongest are not the survivors. Rather, the survivors are the most adaptable." Whether you agree with Charles Darwin or not, there is little doubt that adaptability, optimism and diligence are important factors in surviving and succeeding in our complex world. It is also worth remembering that having a high IQ will help us in some ways but having a high EQ might help us even more.
