Many of you may have heard about Oxford University or Cambridge University. In Britain, both Oxford and Cambridge are historic cities and both are with the world famous universities. One of the unique features of the university is its college system. The college system at Oxford or Cambridge is unlike that of any university in Canada or America. In order to be admitted by Oxford or Cambridge, a student must first apply to college and become a member of the university through college. At Oxford and Cambridge, the university is like loose federation of faculties and colleges and other academic research and institutions. The university arranges the program of studies, the lecturers and the examinations and awards the degrees. The colleges on the other hand have the responsibilities for selecting, admitting and accommodating all undergraduate students. It other words, a student can not enter the university unless he or she become the member of a college. However, the university lays down the admission qualification for undergraduate students and also has certain control over the statues of the individual colleges. The colleges at Oxford and Cambridge are not connected with any particular study and are governed by 20 to 50 fellows. Each fellow of a college is a tutor who is the member of the teaching staff. He teaches his own subject to his own students in his college and responsible for their progress. Most tutors give one or two lecture a week and those lectures may be attended by students from any college of the university. No lecture is compulsory and tutor usually advises students which lecture he should go to. At Oxford and Cambridge, apart from its library and study areas, each college has its separate living quarters and dinning hall, its own sports and social facilities and even its own chapel. And students usually find it convenient and comfortable to live and study within the college proper.
