Start interpreting at the signal… and stop it at the signal… You may take notes while you are listening. Remember you will hear the passages only once. Now let’s begin Part A with the first passage.
Passage 1:
Welcome to Vancouver, Canada’s third largest metropolitan city. Known as Canada’s gateway to the Pacific Ocean, Vancouver is linked by shipping services with the Pacific countries. Manufactured goods from Asia keep flowing into this natural ice-free harbor throughout the year.
A multi-national, multi-cultural society, Vancouver is largely British in character with obvious traditional Chinese influence. Its Chinatown is the second largest Chinese community in North America, second only to San Francisco of the United States.
Passage 2:
We have accomplished a great deal during our brief stay in your country. We have concluded seven agreements—as many as all the previous agreements between our two governments. More importantly, we have seen and talked with your people, and exchanged our views on matters of mutual interest.
In all this, our respect has grown, and our friendship strengthened. And now we have come to Guangzhou for the closing ceremony of the Guanzhou Trade Fair, yet another symbol of the growing ties between our two countries. May I propose a toast to the health of our host and of the Chinese people.

Passage 1:
Passage 2:
