M: no, no, you helped me with my computer last week. I want to repay the favor.
E: no, it's definitely my turn to treat you… you paid last time!
M: oh, that was just a quick bite to eat---that doesn't count!
E: ok, ok, how about we just go Dutch? It's settled. Listen, I'm still pretty new around here, would it be alright if you found the restaurant ?
M: ok…sure.
One Friday night, Ethan and Mei Hui met at a subway station in the center of town and are discussing the restaurant they're going to.
E: ok, so what have you got in store for me tonight?
M: I'm really sorry, Ethan. I tried so hard, but I'm afraid I could't find a Dutch restaurant in town. The best I could do was a German one about 15 minutes from here.
E: what? I don't understand.
M: I though you said you wanted to have Dutch food?
E: Oh! Ha-ha! That's not what I mean when I said 'go Dutch'!
M: Huh? What were you talking about, then?
E: 'going Dutch' means to split the bill, silly!
M: ohhh...that makes so much more sense! Ha-ha. Well, great, I don't like German food anyway!
