Expressing Pessimism
Mary: I'm a little confused right now. Why did you give up your contract again?
John: I hate to sound pessimistic, but I felt we were just a little too busy to handle another new project.
Mary: But you could have transferred the contract to one of our other companies.
John: We don't have another company that can handle such a big project, and I would hate to lose a customer because we did something wrong or not very well.
Mary: Sometimes, I don't think I understand you. Are you afraid of a little hard work?
John: It's not that. We can't do that, It's too difficult. We'll probably screw it up. I'm just thinking about the future. I hope our customers can appreciate that it is their concerns that made me choose this.
