Japan has started to discharge radioactive water from its stricken Fukushima nuclear plant into the Pacific Ocean.

A live video from a control room at the plant showed a staff member turn on a seawater pump with a click of a mouse, marking the beginning of the controversial project that is expected to last for decades.

Approved two years ago by the Japanese government and greenlighted by the U.N. nuclear watchdog last month, the discharge has prompted backlash from Japan’s regional neighbors.
