Unit 8 Transportation
Lesson 29
1.2 Before the invention of trains and cars,
people could use three basic types
of transportation.
They could travel on horseback
or ride on the back of another animal
such as a donkey,
a camel etc,
or they could ride in a cart pulled by a horse.
For a person who could not afford a horse
or a donkey,
the only choice waste travel on foot, that is,
to walk.
In ancient times, rivers were difficult to cross
People could not cross wide rivers
unless they had some sort of boat.
However,if a river was not too wide,
people could build a bridge across it.
In places where the river was not very deep,
people could walk across.
In the past,
roads were very different from today.
They were just dirt tracks.
So,in the winter the rain
and sonw made these tracks full of mud.
Sometimes,the roads were so bad
that heavy cars could not pass.
Even in good weather,
travelling by road was slow.
It could take many days
to travel a few hundred kilometers.
