Unit 10 A Project
1.Listen,read and practice in pairs.
Have you ever done a big assignment called a "project"?
What's in a project? How long does it usually take?
Why are students interested in projects?
That's what LiMeng is going to find out.
LiMeng:Hi,Daniel.You know what?
Our English teacher asked us to do a mid-term project each.
I need your help.
Daniel:What kind of help do you need?
LiMeng:I need to get some rough ideas about projects.
Have you done one before?
Daniel:Yeah.I once did a project on drunk-driving.
I learned so many people died in car accidents.
The number shocked me and my classmates.
LiMeng:So you collected some numbers for your project?
Daniel:Not just numbers.I also put a few pictures of accident scenes in it.
I'm sure I'll never forget those.
If you want to give a long-lasting impression, you should add some photos too.
LiMeng:Is there anything else I should know?
Daniel:Well,actually,
the most important thing you should do is to choose an interesting topic.
LiMeng:I know! The goldseekers should be an exciting topic.
Daniel:Are you thinking about the Chinese goldseekers
who came to Australia more than a hundred years ago?
LiMeng:Yeah.I heard people talk about an old gold mine at Sovereign Hill.
I think I should go and collect some first-hand information.
Daniel:Right. You should take a digital camera along to get some snapshots.
6.Listen,read and then answer in pairs.
Have you ever seen a town that looks the same as it was more than 150 years ago?
Can you imagine talking to people in old-fashioned clothes
and eating cookies and pies that haven't changed for such a long thime?
Have you walked in a cold, dark gold mine?
Would you be afraid?Come to Sovereign Hill.
Tour guide:Now,the first thing you should know is,follow me closely:
or you'll never find your way out.
LiMeng:Please,Miss.I can hear water running.
Tour guide:Yes.Please come over, everyone.See this huge machine here?
It's working 24 hours a day to pump out the water.
If it stops, this place we're standing in will soon be deep in water.
Xiaohong:Oh,my goodness.I hope we are safe here.
Tour guide:Don't worry. Now,here,in this dark little place,
the gold miners rested and ate their lunch.
See those candles?Anyone knows what they are for.
LiMeng:To help them see their food.
Xiaohong:Yeah.Otherwise it'd be pitch-dark here and frightening.
Tour guide:Actually,if the candlelight died down,
the miners would run for their lives. You know why?
10.Listen,read and act.
In the classroom,LiMeng is telling his classmates about his trip to the gold mine.
LiMeng:While we were underground,
we also saw a movie which told a sad story about some Chinese gold miners.
Peter:A movie shown underground in a real gold mine?I can't believe it.
LiMeng:Yes.It was real.
There's a place in the mine where you can actually see gold.
Mary:Have you brought back some?
LiMeng:Yes!Well,not gold,but some great photos!
Look at this one. It's a candlemaking demonstration.
And this one is a sweet making demo.It was really eye-catching.
John:I seem to remember there's a gold museum down there.
LiMeng:Correct! We also went there and saw an exciting exhibition--pieces of gold
old machines, old clothes, pictures of the old town, its history and everything.
Mary:You should add those thikngs to your project.
John:Yeah.Just think about them, stories, history and photos.
If you put those things together nicely, you should produce something top-notch.
12.Listen,read and lean.
Have you got a good idea?
Sitting in your classroom and gazing at the walls,
I'm sure in a minute you may come up with some very good ideas
about how to decorate those classroom walls.
This may include placing students'assignments on those walls.
You may also have many other ideas about how to make your classroom more beautiful.
If you think harder and the teacher doesn't interrupt you,
you may go on producing new and wonderful ideas.
An idea is a thought or a picture that you have in your mind.
Generally speakin, everybody has got some ideas.
You may think about changing the classroom environment.
You may also think about how to finish the teacher's assignments.
However, good ideas and even brilliant ideas
often need to be further developed by more careful thought and deeper thinking.
If you think about your teacher's job for a while,
you may think of ideas like making some dustless chalks for teachers
and creating a kind of computer-controlled big white board.
You may design a system which would let the teacher just
press the next-page button on the computer so that a clean,
white board would be presented right in front of the teacher.
Brilliant ideas are very important.
They can help us change our lives, change our perception of the world,
and lead us into a new stage of living
Without creativity the human species would not have advanced
and we'd still be living in caves.
Everything associated with progress comes from ideas
and the best ideas come from people using the proper tools and processes.
No matter where they happen
some new ideas and the waves they create will affect our job,
our health, our prosperity and our world.
A supermarket is loaded with ideas about what to eat.
Most of which we could not remember if we were not in that environment.
But as we walk through the supermarket each
item reminds us of what we might have for dinner.
As a result we can generate lots of ideas in a relatively short time.
With excellent ideas,we can turn trash into treasure!
We can make the best and fullest use of discarded glasses,
bottles,boxes,old light bulbs,paper bags,dry leaves,
egg shells and orphaned socks and create great craft projects and gifts.
Ideas ate very important and necessary.
The bottom line is"Have you got a good idea or a brilliant noe?"
