Colleen M. One compelling illustration that appearances can cloud reality is shown in the Supreme Court case of 1843, Plessy verses Ferguson. This case stated that separate facilities for blacks and whites were constitutional as long as they were created equal. On first appearance this "separate but equal"doctrine seemed fair. However, after further examination, people began to see that this inherent equality did not exist. The separate facilities for African Americans deteriorated and were not nearly as "equal" as some presumed. This case created the illusion that African Americans and whites were equal however in reality true equality was not created.
