A Russian official says his country is ready to provide a security escort for destruction of Syria’s chemical weapons that are due to be handed over by the end of the year.
Russia says it will provide vehicles and help transport the chemical weapons to the Syrian port of Latakia. Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, earlier said the Russian navy will also provide security for ships that will be loaded with the stockpile. The timetable for the hand over was forged after an attack on the outskirts of Damascus which killed hundreds in August.
The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons says the US government will contribute destruction technology and full operational support. The chemicals will most likely be destroyed on an especially equipped US ship in the Mediterranean Sea.
