China has responded angrily to the controversy surrounding the 16-year-old Chinese swimmer, Ye Shiwen, whose world-record performance in the Olympic pool on Saturday raised eyebrows.
The doping doubts raised over Ye also provoked an outcry of wounded national pride among Chinese internet users.
On Tuesday afternoon, the news of the allegations against Ye ranked as one of the hottest topics on Sina Weibo, China's leading microblogging site, and attracted more than 1m comments.
"The only motive for the western media to attack Ye Shiwen is because she is Chinese!!", wrote a blogger under the name AC Lao Shen on Sina Weibo.
Many of the postings on Sina Weibo evoked an echo of the wave of nationalist sentiment that swept across young Chinese when the Olympic torch on its way to the Beijing games encountered protests and criticism of their home country because of China's poor human rights record.
They are a reminder that despite Chinese government appeals for modesty ahead of the London games, the country remains very much focused on winning and views the games as a major venue to continue its rise into a global power, improve its international image and overcome what Communist party propaganda has billed as more than a century of humiliation at the hands of western powers.
"That is the real attitude of the western media towards Chinese success, a typical case of sour grapes!", wrote Nanxi Yujiao.
"Don't think that only western countries can win gold medals!", said a blogger with the moniker DC.
Many Chinese, especially the young, complain that the outside world does not pay them the respect their country deserves. Admittedly they can be deeply cynical among themselves about corruption, the lack of democracy and environmental degradation under Communist party rule. But raised on a diet of nationalist propaganda, the extent of China's negative image comes as a shock to many. Chinese students and tourists abroad often feel that their country is demonised and misunderstood in the west.
Mark Adams, spokesman for the International Olympic Committee, said in London on Tuesday: "We need to get real. These are the world's best athletes competing at the highest level. You know that in the final, the first five are tested and two others. So, we have a very, very strong testing programme and we are confident that if there are cheats, we will catch them."
Lord Moynihan, the chairman of the British Olympic Association, was more explicit in his support for the young Chinese swimmer and condemned speculation in the media.
He said at a press conference on Tuesday: "She's gone through the Wada [World Anti-Doping Agency] programme, so then that is the end of the story. Let us recognise there is a swimmer out there, Ye Shiwen, that deserves recognition."
He added: "It is regrettable that there is so much speculation out there in the press. I don't like it. I think it is wrong."
