The worst kept secret in Silicon Valley is that tech firms have a major gender diversity problem. At company after company, men dominate the top jobs.
In China, things look ratherdifferent. CNNMoney spoke with Jane Jie Sun, the chief operating officer ofCtrip, about the role women play in the tech industry. Ctrip is China's largestonline travel agency.
Facebook (FB, Tech30) hasSheryl Sandberg, and Yahoo has Marissa Mayer, but Chinese tech firms seem tohave more women executives. Why is that?
Yes, that is very true, and I think thereare a couple of reasons. When the Communist Party took over in China they dida good thing -- they taught that "women hold up half the sky."
So women are expected to work. In mygrandmother's generation, none of the women worked -- they all stayed home andtook care of the children.
But for my mother's generation, they wereequal to men. So for me, there was no doubt that when I grew up and had children,I would work too.
was blessed in another way但到了我母亲那一代,她们与男性是平等的。
And more recently?
My generation was blessed in another way. When we went to university, [Chinese reformer] Deng Xiaoping opened the door tostudents and we had an opportunity to go study in the United States.
And then when I graduated from university, Silicon Valley was taking off. We were able to see thedevelopment of Yahoo (YHOO, Tech30) and Google (GOOG) --all these great companies. A few years later, when the Internet bubble burst, China's economywas booming, and I was able to use my skills to act as a bridge between the twocultures.
What about society's role?
I think family structure in China is verysupportive. In the United States, many people depend just on thenuclear family. With children, it's harder to have both parents working.
But in China, grandparents live very closeby and are very involved. If parents need to travel for work, the grandparentswill be able to help out. So the infrastructure of the family is also a veryimportant factor to support women working in China.
How do you help get more women involved intech?
When we were raised up, girls and boys weretreated equally, and the girls would compete against the boys in math, physicsand chemistry. And the girls were just as good as the boys.
Being a working mother is challenging, butrewarding. I want women to see that hard work can lead to a good future.
I was surprised to learn that athird of Alibaba's partners are women. Do you work together as a supportgroup?
Oh yes, absolutely. Alibaba's chieffinancial officer is a good friend of mine. In fact, many of the women atChinese Nasdaq-listed companies are good friends of mine. We all work togethervery well.
There are so many women executives in China, and wesupport each other. We refer good candidates to each other and help promotethem. If we run into certain issues, we share our experiences.
