US tech shares were under pressure again on Wednesday, rattling the wider market given the sector’s contribution to a record-breaking bull run over the past year.

After their worst one-day drop on Tuesday, several of the so-called Faang (Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, Google) stocks fell further as a mix of regulatory scrutiny and a more defensive mindset from investors left them out of favour.
Shares in Apple, still the largest company on the stock market, by late afternoon in New York had dropped about 0.5 per cent to $167.49, Amazon was 4 per cent lower at $1,434.32 and video-streaming service Netflix slipped about 3.5 per cent to $290.28. There was, however, some respite for Facebook as its shares climbed 0.8 per cent to $153.41, after tumbling the previous day, while those of Alphabet, Google’s parent company, also edged higher.
“The question for equity markets is how much contagion there will be from the tech stock sell-off,” said Paul Hatfield, at Alcentra, part of BNY Mellon Investment Management.

The weakness in the Faangs, a group of large tech companies that have attracted investors over the past year with an intoxicating mix of disruptive technology and near-dominant positions in their respective markets, comes as the supportive global economic backdrop that prevailed last year faces new threats.

The Amazon decline — the shares fell as much as 7.4 per cent earlier in the session — came after a report on the Axios website said Donald Trump was looking for ways to “go after” the company, quoting an unnamed friend of the president. Amazon’s founder and chief executive Jeff Bezos owns the Washington Post, a paper that he frequently labels as “fake news”.
Overall, the Nasdaq, home to many of the largest tech companies, was down about 0.4 per cent by late afternoon in New York on Wednesday and was only just in positive territory for the year at 6981. The S&P 500 was roughly flat at 2613, and on track for its first quarterly loss since 2015.
