Carol leaned towards the river and looked upstream; nothing, no one, not a sound.
She was lost and it was her fault. She had laid herself open to this cruelty by teasing her boyfriend, Tom.
But she had never have expected him to pay her back by leaving her in the cold like this.
Tom was at the moment, however, the least of all of her worries.
First she had to get out of these woods! And that meant finding the trail!
Unfortunately Tom had led the way and she hadn't been paying attention.
He was her leading light and she didn't care where they were going.
When he led her off the trail she hadn't even noticed.
Then when he went off by himself to go to the bathroom behind some trees, she just let him go.
He never came back! He was probably watching her and leaning over backwards to keep from laughing.
"You'll pay for this, Tom Brady," she yelled into the woods. "I swear!"
But he didn't answer. She lay to rest the idea of him helping her and decided to find her way out by herself.
She knew that she could. She had learned the ropes about wilderness survival when she was a kid.
She had even learned survival skills by rote.
In her mind Carol leafed through the survival book she had memorized.
Where was the trail? She thought to herself. It had led up to the river at one point.
Maybe if she just followed the river she would find the trail.
Sure enough, after walking for only 10 minutes the river led Carol to a trail.
She smiled and began plotting how she would take her revenge on her snake of a boyfriend.
