CALYPSO
For nine days Ulysses floated upon his raft, until he came to the island where dwelt the goddess Calypso.
On this island Ulysses stayed seven years, much against his will, thinking always of his home, his wife Penelope,
and his young son Telemachus. Then Athena complained to Zeus that one so just had been so long kept from his home.
Zeus said that it should be so no longer, and he sent Hermes to Calypso to tell her to let Ulysses depart.
Athena, meanwhile, went to Ithaca to bid Telemachus to go in search of his father. Hermes drew on his golden sandals,
took his wand in his hand, and came to the island where Calypso dwelt.
A fair place it was. In the cave a fire of sweet-smelling wood was burning,
and Calypso sat at her loom and sang with a lovely voice. Round about the cave was a grove of alders and cypresses,
wherein many birds nested. All about the mouth of the cave was a vine with purple clusters of grapes.
Four fountains streamed four ways through the meadows of green and violet. But Ulysses was not there,
for he sat, as was his custom, on the seashore, weeping and groaning because he was kept from his wife and home and country.
When Calypso saw Hermes, she bade him come within, and gave him meat and drink. When he had ended his meal,
she asked him about his errand. He told her that he had come at the bidding of Zeus,
and that it was the pleasure of the gods that Ulysses should return to his native country. This message vexed Calypso, and she said:
You gods are always jealous when a goddess loves a mortal man. But let him go, if it pleases Zeus. Only I cannot send him,
for I have neither ship nor rowers. Yet will I willingly help him.
Hermes said, Do this thing speedily, lest Zeus be angry with thee. So he departed. Calypso sought Ulysses and said,
Long no more for thy native country. If thou wilt go, I will speed thee on thy way.
I will help thee make a raft and will give thee bread, water, and wine,
and clothe thee also, so that thou mayest return safe, for the gods will have it so.
