UN confirms death of 16 UN staffers
The United Nations has confirmed the death of 16 UN staffers at its peace-keeping mission in Haiti. A five-story U.N. headquarters building in Port au Prince was destroyed by Tuesday's 7.0 magnitude quake.
According to the UN Secretary General-- Ban Ki-moon,the dead included 11 Brazilians, three Jordanians, one Argentine and one Chadian. The UN peacekeepers are still working around the clock to reach those trapped under the rubble of the building. The UN chief is urging the international community "to come to Haiti's aid", while announcing that the UN would provide 10 million US dollars for relief from its emergency fund.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon said, "As you are aware, buildings and infrastructure were heavily damaged throughout the capital. Basic services such as water, electricity
have collapsed almost entirely. We are yet to establish a number of dead or injured which we fear may well be in the hundreds. Medical facilities have been inundated with injured. There is no doubt that we are facing a major humanitarian emergency and that a major relief effort will be required."
