First of all , let's have a review. 大家还记得在第八课中我们学到的与“covering one's whole body”以及“very much , completely , thoroughly”同义的口语说法吗？这些说法都跟我们的身体部位有关。它们是：from head to toe, from head to feet , from top to toe 浑身上下，从头到脚，遍布全身；彻底彻尾地，完全所有地，极其，非常。

现在我们开始第9课的学习。Lesson Nine: How to say “明白”in real American English? 第九课：明白 地道美语怎么说？

【课堂详讲】

说道“明白”，大家自然会首先想到表示“明白”的我们再熟悉不过的词了“understand”, it means "grasp the meaning ( of a word , a person, a language)". 可是既然Juliet是在话说地道美语，当然要交给大家一个地道的说法。What's it? Listen to the following sentence: I can't make head nor tail out of the lousy memo. 我完全看不懂这分潦草的便签。在这个句子中用了一个含有head， h-e-a-d（脑袋）和tail , t-a-i-l （尾巴）这2个单词的一个动词短语了表述：明白，弄清楚。它是：make head or tail out of something. 这个短语通常与cannot , couldn't 搭配用于否定句中。在否定句中，make head or tail out of 中的or就要变为nor, n-o-r. 此外，这个短语中的out 可以省略，即：make head or tail of .

Let's look at two more sentences. 1 I can't make head nor tail out of what he is saying . 我弄不清楚他在说什么。2 She couldn't make head nor tail of the form she is signing. 她弄不懂她在签署的表格。

Can't ( couldn't ) make head nor tail of 这个结构后面只能够跟物，那么我们要说不明白某人做某事，这还得用上understand这个词的一个结构，understand somebody doing something. 注意了understand后面跟人称代词的宾格，宾格后用现在分词短语，这个分词短语做宾语的补足语。For example: I can't understand him handling the problem in such a foolish way. 我不明白他用如此愚蠢的方式处理这个问题。

Let's have a summary. 在今天的课堂上，我们学了与“understand”同义的一个地道表达，它跟一个动物的身体部位有关，它是：make head or tail (out ) of something. 注意这个短语与can't ( couldn't ) 搭配用与否定句，不用于肯定句，用于否定句中，or要改为nor. 要说明白某人做某事的短语结构为：understand somebody doing something. 亲爱的听众朋友，您记住了吗？That's enough for this morning .
