Let's turn to South Africa, where Chinese made trains will soon be running on the country's railways. A Chinese company handed over two locomotives, or the engine parts of trains, to its South African partner on Monday. These two locomotives are just the early arrivals of 95 Chinese made engine trains in the South African market.
It's Chinese train maker CSR's biggest single export deal for electric locomotives. CSR is selling 95 locomotives to South Africa's largest railway company Transnet for about 400 million US dollars over three years.
Exporting engine technology is key to winning South Africa's railway market. More than half of Transnet's 2100 locomotives are out of date, and the country's 10,000 miles of electrified railways need new trains urgently.
CSR says it will hand over another eight locomotives to Transnet by the end of this year. The remaining 85 locomotives will be assembled in South Africa before February 2015.
