A little boy told his dad he flunked his math test.
The father asked his son why.
The kid replied, "The math whiz who sits next to me was absent on the day of the test."

"flunk"除了表“(考试)不及格”，还可以表示“通不过(考试等）、（某学科)没通过、因成绩差而被退学(flunk out)。

"next"当形容词时，表“隔壁的，旁边的”不需再加介词，如：the next house隔壁家；但在这里，用于说明人或物是在隔壁或旁边时，则须加介词to,如：The house is next to mine.这房子在我家隔壁。"mine"是名词性物主代词，在这里表示my house。
