One in four Australians are worried about how they will cover Christmas expenses with a growing number concerned about the gap between rich and poor, research commissioned by the Salvation Army has found.

The survey of almost 1200 people found almost 72 per cent of respondents felt the gulf between the haves and have nots was widening, compared with only 60 per cent who gave the same response in 2011.
