Track One
Prior to 1655 when we were colonised by the English
We still have some places – the architecture is still similar to Spanish architecture
Tourism is our highest earner of foreign exchange – we pride ourselves on the tourism industry
One of the things we are trying to do is to attract Chinese tourists
Recently our government instituted a policy where Chinese tourists can come to Jamaica without a visa and stay for thirty days
We are a region that is certainly rich in cultural diversity – our food, our music
Jamaica is a former British colony – slavery was abolished in 1834
As such the plantation owners had to find another way of supplementing the labour force
So they turned to both China and India to get indentured labour
The first lot of Chinese would have come over in 1864 – it would have been predominantly from the southern part – Guangdong, etc.
So that would have been the first lot of Chinese coming to supplement the labour force on the sugar plantations
We also have a few coffee plantations
We used to be the jewel of the British colonies in the Caribbean in terms of our sugar industry
Track Two
Chinese and the Indians would come over as indentured labour
After that there were other waves of Chinese coming into Jamaica
My great grandfathers on both my mother's and father's side were both from Guangzhou
There is that Chinese influence and when they came over a lot of them would have started businesses – grocery shops, restaurants, laundries
They are known for that sort of business
They would have mixed with local women – both my great grandmothers were local women
Even in Jamaica today people would identify me as mixed with Chinese
As opposed to here where one of the most common comments I get here is “are you from South Africa, are you from America”
I say no I am from Jamaica – but they do not see the Chinese mix – but it is evident in Jamaica that I am mixed with Chinese
It is very interesting this notion of identity and of race
People are asking me “well what are you?”
And I say I am Jamaican and what does it mean to be Jamaican?
Not only am I mixed with Chinese I am mixed with black, Hispanic – my grandfather's parents were from Ecuador
And we have some Scottish roots as well
My last name is Cann – my grandmother's Chinese name is Xing Gao – I think that was also because we could not pronounce the Chinese
So a lot of names got changed when you came into the colonies – to fit the English mandate to register in the colonies
