For the first time in 80 years, a new species of orangutan has been discovered in the rugged highland forests in western Sumatra. The species has already been classified as endangered as it faces threats to its natural habitat. There are about 800 Tapanuli orangutans residing on land protected by the Indonesian government, but a proposed hydroelectric dam along a river nearby would flood part of their habitat and split up the population. The dam could also bring more humans to the area which would increase the likelihood of hunting.
