Jingjing: Mark, how's your summer going?
京晶：马克，夏天过得怎样？
Mark: It's keeping me busy. So, I can't complain.
马克：一直在忙。所以我没什么可抱怨的。
Jingjing: That's good to hear.
京晶：这是好事啊。
Mark: I can't say the same for my friend, Fred, though. Fred's my former student, and he's doing an internship these days.
马克：对我的朋友弗雷德来说可就不是这样了。

Jingjing: That sounds alright. Is Fred still an undergraduate?

Mark: Yeah, next year will be his third. He's hoping to do two internships before graduation.

Jingjing: Fred sounds like a go-getter. So, what's the matter?

Mark: At his internship, they have him doing a bunch of paperwork and filing. It's not what he had in mind when he thought about getting work experience.

Jingjing: That doesn't sound bad at all. It reminds me of what Andrew Carnegie said about the road to success.

Mark: Oh, I had to memorize that! I think it goes like this: But if by chance the professional sweeper is absent any morning, the boy who has the genius of the future partner in him will not hesitate to try his hand at the broom. It does not hurt the newest comer to sweep out the office if necessary. I was one of those sweepers myself.

Jingjing: Exactly! So, pushing papers isn't so bad. It's better than sweeping, at any rate. And I bet it gives him time and perspective on business culture.

Mark: I'll have to tell Fred you said that. What other pearls of wisdom should I pass along?

Jingjing: He should use the internship as a chance to do networking.

Mark: How do you mean?

Jingjing: Well, Fred should make friends with the other interns, and the people at that company. They could all help him when it comes to his next internship and job hunting down the road.
京晶：就是说，弗雷德应该和其他实习生以及那家公司的同事交朋友。这些人都有可能在他下次实习或者未来求职的时候帮到他。
Mark: I agree. I've known lots of interns who were super shy. Fred's a pretty outgoing guy, though. He shouldn't have any problem with networking, once he knows how necessary it is.
马克：同意。我认识很多非常害羞的实习生。不过弗雷德是个外向的人。一旦他知道人脉有多重要，他就不会有任何社交上的问题。
Jingjing: Oh, and there's one other thing.
京晶：对了，还有一件事。
Mark: What's that?

Jingjing: Fred should befriend the department manager, and get a letter of recommendation from that manager.
京晶：弗雷德应该和自己的部门经理成为朋友，并从经理那里得到一封推荐信。
Mark: Right. That'd be a good reference.
马克：对，那真是很好的推荐了。

Jingjing: Mark, have you heard any more from Fred these past few days?

Mark: Yes. He was afraid to go over his supervisor's head about the letter of recommendation. So, his supervisor wrote it. But then his supervisor told him he'll be quitting in a few weeks. So, the department manager signed his letter of recommendation.
马克：有的。他不敢越级去找部门经理要推荐信。所以他的主管写了这封信。但之后他的主管又告诉他几周后就要辞职了。所以，最后还是部门经理在他的推荐信上签了名。
Jingjing: Wow, that's a long story with a simple ending.
京晶：哇哦，过程曲折，结局简单。
Mark: Yeah, he took your advice indirectly.
马克：是的，他还是间接接受了你的建议。
Jingjing: Hey, you never told me the name of the company where Fred is doing his internship.
京晶：嘿，你还从来没给我说过弗雷德实习的那家公司的名字。
Mark: Oh, it's a start-up called Lazy Fresh. You've probably not heard of it.
马克：哦，那是一个刚创办的公司，名字是“懒惰的新鲜”。你很可能都没听说过。
Jingjing: Wow, that's the worst of both worlds: he has to do grunt work and can't put a major name on his résume.

Mark: Yeah, that's how he feels. Although, for networking, it's probably a good thing, because if people go their separate ways, he has that many more leads when looking for a job.

Jingjing: That's putting a positive spin on it, Mark. I knew you were an optimist!

Mark: Hmm, what do you recommend for his internship next year?

Jingjing: Well, obviously, he needs to get a big name on his résume.
