Hello! This is Emma from mmmEnglish.
你好!我是来自mmmEnglish的Emma。
In this lesson, I want to share some of my favourite English adjectives with you!
在这节课中,我想和大家分享一些我最喜欢的英语形容词。
To be expressive, to show emotion and feeling and to sound more interesting in English,
为了更有表现力,表达情感和感觉,让英语听起来更有趣,
then you need to start pushing your vocabulary further.
你需要开始进一步提高你的词汇量。
Saying something is “nice”or “beautiful”is good…
说某事物是“nice”或“beautiful”是没错的。
But adjectives like magnificent, remarkable or inspirational are so much more meaningful!
但是像“magnificent”、“remarkable”或“inspirational”这样的形容词要有意义得多!
So let's talk about adjectives.
我们来谈谈形容词。
They're a big group of words in English!
它们是英语中的一大组单词!
And they're used to describe or to give more information about a noun.
它们被用来描述或提供关于一个名词的更多信息。
Word order is important with adjectives.
词序对形容词很重要。
When used next to a noun, the adjective comes before the noun!
当与名词连用时,形容词在名词之前!
Like this: A or an with an adjective plus a noun.
像这样:A或an加上形容词和名词。
“An incredible story.”
“一个令人难以置信的故事。”
This structure is really common too!
这种结构也很常见!
A noun plus the be verb plus an adjective.
名词+ be动词+形容词。
“Her recommendations were excellent.”
“她的推荐非常棒。”
So today, I want to share eight of my favourite adjectives with you, to help you build your vocabulary when you're describing things - or places!
所以今天,我想和大家分享8个我最喜欢的形容词,帮助大家在描述事物或地方时扩大词汇量。
Now I’m including both positive and negative adjectives
现在我把肯定的和否定的形容词都包括进来了,
so when things are good, when things are bad and also neutral adjectives,
当事情是好的时候,当事情是坏的时候,还有中性的形容词,
when things are OK, but nothing special.
当事情还算可以,但是没有什么特别的。
All of the adjectives that I’m going to talk about can be used to describe people too
我要讲的所有形容词也都可以用来描述人,
but they're commonly used to describe places and things –
但它们通常用来描述地点和事物
so that's what we're focusing on today!
这就是我们今天的重点!
Magnificent. Magnificent.
Magnificent,壮丽的。
Can you hear where the stress is?
你能听到重音在哪里吗?
Magnificent.
Magnificent
You can use this adjective when something is very impressive or it's very inspiring or very beautiful.
你可以用这个形容词来形容某事非常令人印象深刻、非常鼓舞人心或非常美丽。
When it's used with people it can also mean that they are very skillful.
当它用于人的时候,也可以表示他们非常熟练。
Now see how all of those examples use “very”
现在看看这些例子是如何使用very的
in front of regular adjectives?
在规则形容词前面?
That’s because magnificent is an extreme adjective, a really strong adjective.
因为magnificent是一个形容程度很深的形容词,一个非常强烈的形容词。
So you can use it to add emphasis to your emotions.
所以你可以用它来强调你的情绪。
For example: “That meal was magnificent.
例如:“That meal was magnificent。
I haven’t eaten that well in a long time!”
我好久没吃得这么好了!”
“We woke up at sunrise and had a magnificent view over the Indian Ocean.”
“我们在日出时醒来,看到印度洋的壮丽景色。”
“You were magnificent!”
“You were magnificent!”
(That's talking about your performance) Remarkable.
(指的是你的表现)很出色。
Remarkable.
Remarkable.
Hear that stress?
听到重音所在了吗?
Use this adjective when something surprises you or it impresses you!
当某事让你感到惊讶或给你留下深刻印象时,使用这个形容词。
And it’s worth commenting on, because it's unique or it's unusual.
它值得评论,因为它是独一无二的,或者不寻常。
For example.
例如,
“The Guggenheim is a remarkable building.”
“古根海姆是一座非凡的建筑。”
“It is remarkable that the pyramids in Egypt were built thousands of years ago!”
“埃及的金字塔是几千年前建造的,这是很了不起的。”
“After the car accident, he made made a remarkable recovery.”
“车祸后,他恢复得很好。”
“His presentation was remarkable - it was unlike any of the others at the conference.”
“他的报告很出色,不同于会上其他的报告。”
Remarkable can also be used to describe a person, when they're unlike anyone else that you've ever met.
Remarkable也可以用来形容一个人,当他和你见过的其他人都不一样的时候。
Or they've done something really inspiring, they're really clever.
或者他们做了一些非常鼓舞人心的事情,他们非常聪明。
Like “She really is a remarkable woman.”
如“她真是个了不起的女人。”
The opposite is unremarkable - and it's used when something is not special or unique at all.
它的反义词是unremarkable——当某物一点都不特别或独一无二的时候就可以用。
Obvious.
Obvious.
Another good one.
另一个很好的形容词。
The stress is always important with adjectives
重音对形容词来说总是很重要的,
because pushing down on that stressed syllable helps you to emphasise the word and to make the meaning stronger.
因为重读音节有助于你强调这个词,使意思更强。
If something is “obvious”, it’s really clear and it's easy to understand.
如果某件事是“显而易见的”,那么意味着它是非常清楚的,很容易理解。
“It’s obvious that he’s in love with you!”
“很明显,他爱上你了!”
“It was obvious that she didn’t want to be at the party.”
“很明显,她不想参加聚会。”
(Her behaviour, her body language, her tone of voice..
(她的举止,她的肢体语言,她的声调。
it was clear that she didn’t want to be there)
很明显,她不想在那儿。)
“Ooops, that was an obvious mistake!”
“哎呀,那是个明显的错误!”
Acceptable.
可以接受的。
Now this is a very neutral adjective, but it's a useful one!
这是一个非常中性的形容词,但它很有用!
It’s used when something is reasonable for what most people would think.
当某事符合大多数人的想法时,就用这个短语。
You know, it’s generally accepted or allowed.
你知道,这是被普遍接受的。
So for example.
例如,
“These days, flexible working hours are becoming more acceptable to employers.”
“如今,弹性工作时间越来越为雇主所接受。”
“Please let me know if the fees are acceptable.
“请告诉我费用是否可以接受。”
If you're OK with it.”
如果你同意的话。”
The opposite is unacceptable.
相反的情况是不可接受的。
So that’s a good way to start building on your vocabulary - learning the opposites of these adjectives.
所以这是一个开始扩大词汇量的好方法——学习这些形容词的反义词。
Unacceptable.
不受欢迎的
“My hotel room was filthy!
“我住的旅馆房间很脏!
It's unacceptable!”
这是不可接受的!”
Impossible. Impossible.
不可能的。不可能的。
If something is impossible, it can’t be done OR it's extremely difficult to do.
如果某件事是不可能的,那它就不能被做,或者它是非常难做的。
“No, it’s impossible.
“不,这是不可能的。
It can't be done!”
不可能完成!”
“My boss gave me an impossible task.”
“老板给了我一个不可能完成的任务。”
“Adam is so badly behaved, it’s impossible to take him anywhere!”
“亚当的行为如此恶劣,不可能把他带到任何地方去!”
“It’s impossible to become fluent in English, without practising with English speakers!”
“不与说英语的人练习,就不可能流利地说英语!”
Significant. Significant.
重要的。重要的。
Now this adjective can be used to say that something is important or large.
现在这个形容词可以用来表示某事很重要或很大。
And it’s often used to describe a change that's very noticeable.
它经常被用来描述一个非常明显的变化。
For example.
例如。
“It’s a significant building in the city.”
“它是这座城市的重要建筑。”
“Significant changes have taken place since you left.”
“自从你离开后,发生了很大的变化。”
“There has been a significant increase in population over the last 10 years.”
“在过去的十年里,人口有了显著的增长。”
Ridiculous. Ridiculous.
Ridiculous,荒谬。
Hear the stress when I exaggerate?
听到我夸张的重音了吗?
“That’s ridiculous!”
“真荒谬!!”
Also notice how this ‘u’ - is pronounced as /j/ NOT ri-di-coo-les but ri-dic-oo-les
注意这个u的读音是/j/不是ri-di-coo-les而是ri-di- oo-les
Now this is a great adjective –
这是个很好的形容词
it can be used to describe people too,
它也可以用来形容人,
but you need to be careful with your facial expression and your tone because it can be a negative thing.
但是你需要注意你的面部表情和语气,因为这可能是一件消极的事情。
It can mean silly or stupid.
它可以表示愚蠢。
“That’s a ridiculous idea.”
“那是个很蠢的想法。”
“You look ridiculous. Take it off!”
“你看起来很蠢。脱掉它!”
“It’s ridiculous that the shops close at 5pm!”
“商店下午5点就关门,太可笑了!”
But it can also mean that something is crazy and it should be laughed at.
但它也可以指某件事很疯狂,应该被嘲笑。
Same sentences again.
同样的句子。
“That’s a ridiculous idea!”
“那是个荒谬的想法!”
“Pfft! You look ridiculous!”
“啐!你看起来很可笑!”
“It’s ridiculous that the shops close at 5pm!”
“商店下午5点就关门,太可笑了!”
Did you pay attention to the difference there?
你注意到那里的不同了吗?
The tone and facial expression are really important so that the listener can understand what you mean.
语气和面部表情非常重要,这样听者才能明白你的意思。
Complicated. Complicated. Complicated.
Complicated,复杂的。
Ooo this is such a good adjective to learn and use well!
这是一个很好的形容词,学习和使用都很好!
You can use it when something is difficult to do, like you know, it’s hard.
当某事很难做的时候,你可以用它,比如你知道的,it’s hard。
Or it’s difficult to understand.
或者很难理解。
Or it could be difficult to deal with or to manage.
或者它可能很难处理或管理。
“The directions he gave were really complicated.”
“他给的指示真的很复杂。”
“They’ve been going out for years, but they have a complicated relationship.”
“他们已经交往多年了,但他们的关系很复杂。”
So, they are my favourite adjectives for describing things in English!
所以,它们是我最喜欢的英语描述事物的形容词!
