Learning a new language, using big words, speaking out loud, all of this takes courage.
学习一门新的语言，使用更加高级的词汇，大声说出自己的想法，这些都需要勇气。
Now courage is the ability to do something even though it might be scary or dangerous or difficult at times.
勇气是做某件事情的能力，尽管这件事情有时候可能令人恐惧，非常危险，或者是很困难。
It relates to your emotional strength.
这与你们的情感力量有关。
To do something that you are scared to do, so it's kind of similar to bravery.
去做你害怕的事情，和bravery有一点相似。
Hands up if this is a little difficult to pronounce.
如果这有点难发音的话，那就举手示意吧。
There are quite a few different ways to pronounce the OU in English words.
有很多不同的发音方式可以发英文单词中的OU。
I talked about them in this lesson actually.
我其实在这节课程中说过了。
Courage.
勇气。
In the word 'courage' we use the …… as in 'up' vowel sound.
在‘勇气’这个单词中，我们使用的是‘up’这个单词里面的元音。
This is the strongest syllable so you need to make sure that you're pronouncing it right
这是最强的音节，所以你需要确信你的发音是对的。
And the final consonant sound might be a little tricky too. The … sound.
最后的辅音可能有点点难。
So to make it, I've got my tongue behind my teeth and pushed up to the top of my mouth but the edges of my tongue are pushed or pressed up to seal the sound in.
想要发这个音的话，我要把我的舌头放在牙齿的后面，然后将舌头上抬，但是舌头的边缘是收紧的，或者是挤压的，来发出这个音。
Okay before the air gets released.

Notice the movement in my lips as well.

Now the verbs 'have' and 'find' are often used with the noun 'courage'.
动词‘have’和‘find’通常和勇气搭配。
He has the courage to do the right thing.
他有勇气去做正确的事情。
Or she found the courage to stand up and speak at the rally.
她找到了勇气站起来在群众集会上讲话。
Now it's definitely worth knowing the adjective 'courageous' as well. Courageous. Courageous.
形容词‘勇敢的’也是值得注意的。勇敢的。勇敢的。
She's a very courageous woman.
她是个非常勇敢的女性。
And if someone doesn't have the courage, well you can, of course, encourage them, right?
如果有人没有勇气的话，你当然可以激励他们了，是吧？
Encourage sounds really similar to courage.
鼓舞听起来和勇气非常相似。
The pronunciation is almost the same but the meaning is a little different.
发音基本上是一样的，但是意思有点不一样。
If you encourage someone, you give them hope and confidence and support to achieve something.
如果你鼓舞某个人的话，你给予他们实现某件事情的希望、信心和支持。
You don't just tell them that they can do it but you help them to believe that they can.
你不只是告诉他们他们可以做到，而是帮助他们相信自己是可以的。
By encouraging someone, you can help them to find courage that they need.
通过鼓舞其他人，你能够帮助他们找到他们所需要的勇气。
And again, we encourage someone to do something.
再说一遍，我们鼓舞某人做某事。
Their cheering encouraged me to finish the marathon, even though I was exhausted.
他们的欢呼鼓舞了我完成马拉松，尽管我已经筋疲力尽了。
Her parents encouraged her to study medicine.
她的父母鼓励她学习医学。
So now let's expand a little.

Something or someone can be encouraging, okay?

That was an encouraging sign. I think we're on the right track.

You can also use the noun 'encouragement'.
你也可以使用名词‘鼓舞’。
And you can use it with verbs like 'give' and 'need'.
你可以将其和动词‘give’和‘need’连用。
I think she needs a little encouragement.
我觉得她需要一点激励。
Her teacher should give her some encouragement.
她的老师应该给她一些鼓舞。
So it's an uncountable noun, right?
这是个不可数名词，对吧？
It's really common to hear this word used with a quantifier like 'some' or 'any', 'a little' or 'a lot'.
经常听到这个单词和‘some’或者是‘any’，‘a little’或者是‘a lot’这些量词连用。
Empower. To empower someone is to give them the strength and the confidence or the authority to do something.
赋予能量。赋予某人能量是给予他们做某件事情的力量、自信或者是授权。
The Ladies' Project empowers women to speak English with strangers.
The Ladies' Project 赋予女性能量，让她们和陌生人说英语。
Even the word itself sounds powerful.
这个单词本身听起来就充满能量。
Notice that the first vowel sound is actually a short sound even though it's spelled with an E it's not …. It's 'empower'.
注意哦，第一个元音很短，尽管是以E开头的，但是并不是这么读，而是“赋予能量”。
So the second syllable is the stressed one.
第二个元音才是重读的。
And that final syllable is unstressed, it's the schwa sound and you don't hear me say that Empower.
最后一个元音是非重读的，那是个中元音，我不会这样读的。
And surely you've noticed the word power in there, right?
当然了，你也注意到里面power这个词了吧？
To empower someone is to make them stronger and more confident to do something and it's often used to talk about giving power or strength or control to someone who doesn't have it.
给某人赋能的意思是让他们更加强壮，更加自信地去做某件事情，通常是用来谈论给予某一个人能量、力量或者是控制感，而这个人本身并没有。
But don't be confused. If you are empowered, it doesn't always mean that you are powerful.
但是不要混淆哦。如果你被赋能的话，并不总是意味着你能量满满。
These two words have quite different meanings.
这两个单词意思完全不同。
So for example: The CEO wants to empower his management team to make strategic decisions for the company.
比如说：总裁向授权他的管理团队为公司做出战略性决策。
What makes you feel empowered?
谁让你感觉自己被赋能了？
Or have you ever empowered someone else in some way?
或者是你是否曾经以某种方式给某人赋能了？
You'll hear the -ed and the -ing adjective forms here.
你可以听到这里的-ed和-ing形容词形式。
So something can be empowering and you can also feel empowered, okay?
某件事情可能为你赋能，而你感觉到自己被赋能了，对吧？
And it's worth knowing the noun 'empowerment' as well. Empowerment.
名词‘empowerment’也值得注意。赋能。
Education is a tool for empowerment.
教育是赋能的一种工具。
These words and their word families are challenging, challenging to pronounce and challenging to use these different types of words correctly
这些单词和它们的单词组都很具有挑战性，发音很具有挑战性，正确地使用不同类型的单词难度也不小，
but if you're still here you're still working hard, then you've got perseverance.

So someone with perseverance keeps trying to succeed even when it's difficult.

Even when things are hard, they keep going.

When they get stuck, they find a way around it.

When they fail, they try again, they don't give up.

So perseverance, it really isn't something that you can learn.
所以持之以恒并不是你能够学习到的东西。
You either have a really strong desire in you to achieve something or you don't.
你或许对于自己实现某件事情有非常强烈的愿望，不然就没有。
So I've got a question for you.
所以我为大家准备了一个问题。
Do you have the perseverance to become fluent in English?
你有持之以恒的决心让自己的英语变得流畅吗？
Can you keep going even when it's difficult?
即使艰难险阻，你也会继续前进吗？
Since you're here and you're practising with me I know that you don't give up easily.

You have perseverance or determination.
大家拥有持之以恒的信念。
You're very determined.
大家都非常坚决。
Or tenacity, you're very tenacious.
或者是顽强的斗志，大家都非常顽强。
These are all synonyms of perseverance.
这都是持之以恒的象征。
Let's focus on the pronunciation for a second. Perseverance.
让我们先看一下发音吧。持之以恒。
That third syllable is the stressed one.
第三个音节重读。
Don't forget that consonant sound at the end, that double consonant.
不要忘记最后的辅音，双辅音。
Now it's really common to hear the verb 'persevere' in difficult situations, right?
经常在困难的境况中听到‘坚持’这个动词是吧？
She chose a difficult career path but she persevered and she graduated with the degree that she wanted.
她选择了一条困难的职业发展道路，但是她坚持下来了，她顺利毕业，获得了她想要的学位。
Can you think of anything that you have persevered through?
你能想到你曾为之坚持的事情吗？
Any of the mama's out there, well, you've persevered through childbirth, right?
所有的母亲都从分娩中挺过来了，是吧？
Anyone who's failed their driver's license several times before, maybe before they finally got it, well you persevered as well.
那些前几次驾照考试失败的人，最后才成功获得了驾照，你们也坚持下来了。
