The 2020 Olympics Are Turning Into a $20 Billion Bust for Japan
The host country expected an unexpected economic downturn and global recognition. But amid the pandemic, a disaffected population just wants it all to end.
The Olympics are opening on Friday a year later in Tokyo during a COVID-19 state of emergency. The anticipation and expectations of economic windfall have largely vanished. Stadiums and arenas that cost more than $7 billion to build or refurbish will remain mostly empty after spectators are banned.
