Hello! I'm John Russell.
Let's continue our exploration of vowel sounds.
These sounds are very important in American English.
If you want to reduce your accent or sound more like an American, it is worth paying careful attention to the differences between these sounds.
So, let's do an activity with two sounds we have explored in recent videos.
In International Phonetic Alphabet (or IPA), they are written like this: /I/ and /i/.
/I/ appears in words such as "sit."
/i/ appears in words like "read."
So, we have our two vowel sounds: /I/ and /i/.
You will hear me say two words.
Listen to what I say, think carefully about the vowel sounds you hear, then say the words.
Let's start. Listen: feel ill, feel ill.
听:feel ill(感觉不舒服),feel ill(感觉不舒服)。
Now think carefully about the vowel sounds you heard.
Which word had which vowel sound?
Now say the words "feel ill."
现在说“feel ill(感觉不舒服)”。
So, you said the words "feel ill."
所以,你说了“feel ill(感觉不舒服)。”
The first word, feel, involves /i/.
The second word, ill, involves /I/.
Now imagine we added a subject pronoun such as "he" or "she."
Now we have the sentence "He feels ill." Or "She feels ill."
You will notice that he and she both have a familiar vowel sound /i/.
That's all for today! Keep up the good work!
