New TV drama ‘Blossoms Shanghai’ fuels tourism boost

The TV drama Blossoms Shanghai has sparked a peak in discussions on social media. The novel-adaption, reflecting on southern China's economic center in the 1990s, will conclude this week, but the related topics it has generated continue to ferment, giving a New Year boost to the local tourism industry in Shanghai.

The long-awaited TV series Blossoms Shanghai was released in two versions — Mandarin and the Shanghai dialect — on Dec 27. Adapted from writer Jin Yucheng's award-winning novel, Fan Hua (Blossoms), the series takes audience back to Shanghai in the early 1990s.

Jin wrote Blossoms Shanghai in the hope that it would help dispel stereotypes about Shanghai and help readers understand its culture. Iconic Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai purchased the adaptation copyright of the novel around a decade ago, and had spent three years on shooting the TV series.
