Los Angeles Wildfires Leave at Least Five Dead as Uncontained Blazes Intensify
At least five people were killed and tens of thousands were forced to evacuate as multiple wildfires devastated the Los Angeles area and stretched the region’s firefighting resources to its limits.
A wind-fueled fire has raced through the affluent Pacific Palisades neighborhood and others sparked and quickly spread around Los Angeles County. A powerful windstorm across the area, paired with dry vegetation and low humidity, has created a dangerous scenario that firefighters are struggling to handle.
A collection of Los Angeles landmarks, including access to the Hollywood Sign, Griffith Park and the Los Angeles Zoo, were closed Wednesday. The National Hockey League postponed an evening Los Angeles Kings game. Schools across the city and county closed. Pepperdine University in Malibu canceled classes—one month after a separate fire encroached on the college campus forced students to shelter in place.
