Wu Yanni: "I Compete to Learn, Not for Fame"
Chinese hurdler Wu Yanni made headlines on March 23 by breaking the national record in the women’s 60-meter hurdles, marking a new milestone in her career.
Wu Yanni said in a post-race interview: "I see competing in the Olympics purely as a learning experience—an opportunity to gain valuable experience in major international competitions. Honestly, my exposure to high-level events has been quite limited. Domestically, I dominate—I can confidently say that as long as I don’t make mistakes, the championship is mine.
But compared to European and American athletes, the gap in overall strength is immense. So, when I compete internationally, I approach it with a learning mindset. Technically, there are no issues, but in terms of absolute speed and raw power, I still have a long way to go.
From the very beginning, my goal in athletics and hurdling has been to prove, through my own efforts, that Chinese track and field—especially Chinese women’s sprinting—can be fast. That’s my original aspiration. Popularity and media attention come and go quickly, but I’ve always said that I don’t rely on fame—I rely on my hard-earned abilities.
During my athletic career, I want to give it my all and leave no regrets. Because to me, having dreams and clear goals is the coolest thing."
