US senator breaks record with 25-hour speech against Trump and Musk
A US senator has accused Donald Trump of “recklessly” challenging the nation’s democratic institutions, in a record-breaking marathon speech to highlight resistance to the President’s sweeping actions.
Cory Booker began talking at 7pm local time in Washington on Tuesday, saying he would remain there as long as he was “physically able”, finishing more than 25 hours later. “These are not normal times in our nation,” the 55-year-old New Jersey lawmaker said as he began.
“And they should not be treated as such in the United States Senate. The threats to the American people and American democracy are grave and urgent, and we all must do more to stand against them.” He added: “Our institutions are being recklessly and unconstitutionally attacked and even shattered.”
Booker broke the record for the longest continuous speech in Senate history, which previously had been set by segregationist Strom Thurmond of South Carolina almost 68 years ago. “I’m here because as powerful as he was, the people are more powerful,” said Booker, who spoke openly on the Senate floor of his roots as the descendant of both slaves and slave-owners.
