Since this year, the May Day holiday has been shortened from a week to three days and some local newspaper in Beijing make a survey on people's reactions.
Beijing Youth Daily reports that many people feel even more tired after the short holiday, since they have to work for six consecutive days after the three-day holidays. As many people working in cities far from their homes prefer to go back home during the holiday, they spend longer time on the road than at home. And after they rush back, they have to work for a whole week.
The Beijing News says environmental and transportation problems haunted them during the short May Day holiday, which were major concerns of the central government when they made changes to the original seven-day May Day holiday. The paper reports that many people who went to suburban Beijing areas were stuck on the road for several hours, as people now prefer short-distance tours. When they reached their tourist destinations, the scenes waiting for them were the large crowds.
With all these problems, Beijing Youth Daily suggests that relevant departments make proper adjustments to the holiday plan. Although many people once preferred to shorten the holiday in order to reduce the burden on transportation and the environment, now that people have experienced the real change, some of them might like to change their minds again. Therefore, it is better for the government to solicit more feedbacks to see whether people prefer the original longer holiday plan or the present shorter one.
