A Chinese farmer has been awarded a Russian national medal for his discovery of the remains of four Russian WWII soldiers who fell while helping to defend China against Japanese invaders in 1945.
The Russian Academy of Military Sciences presented the medal to Liu Guang-lin, a local farmer from northeast China's Heilongjiang Province. The event is part of the activities to commemorate the 70th anniversary of victory in the Soviet Union's Great Patriotic War against Nazi Germany.
Liu discovered four bodies on a mountainside in 2012 and also found metal plates, helmets and badges with Russian cyrillics engraved on them. He reported his discovery to the local government.
Historians from Russia later confirmed that the soldiers belonged to an infantry division of the Soviet far-east army.
The former Soviet Union sent troops to northeast China in 1945. A total of 413 Soviet soldiers died during a battle on the mountain.
Liu transferred the remains to a safe place and kept them for the following three years, before a Sino-Russian project to locate the remains of Russian soldiers started in May.
Later, three more bodies were found during a one-month search in dozens of possible burial sites covering a total of 32 square kilometers.
The remains of all seven soldiers have been buried in a martyrs' park in Mudanjiang City in the province.
