Energy stocks as well as oil prices drove the selloff that dominated.
The Dow finished down 249 points, but with U.S.Crude Oil costs dropping below $27 a barrel.
The Dow at one point pushed to a decline of about 565 points.
Oil prices haven't been this low since mid 2003.
The drop comes months after oil sold at more than $100 a barrel last summer.
Stocks did bounce back, but not enough to rescue the other major indexes.
The S&P dropped 22 points while the NASDAQ slipped by five.
