The federal government has announced a One-off Energy Assistance Payment for struggling households ahead of Tuesday's budget. The payment of 75 dollars for singles and 125 dollars for couples will be exempt from income tax and paid before the end of the financial year. Almost four million low income Australians are expected to benefit from the payment.
The families of two Japanese schoolboys who drowned at Lake McKenzie on Queensland's Fraser Island are due to arrive in Australia today. It comes as questions are now being asked about how the teenagers drowned at the popular tourist destination.
Three people have been killed and hundreds more injured while marking the first anniversary of protests against the Israeli blockade. Israel deployed thousands of soldiers and extra armoured vehicles and artillery in case the protesters stormed the border fence.
And in tennis, Australian Ash Barty has won the biggest title of her career, beating the Czech Karolina Pliskova 7-6, 6-3 to claim the trophy at the Miami Open. Barty will tomorrow break into the world's top-10 becoming the first Australian to do so since Samantha Stosur.
