Data from the U.S. Labor Department shows 6.6 million American workers filed for unemployment benefits last week – the most ever recorded. That brings to 10 million the total number of people who filed over the past two weeks. The figure has far surpassed even the highest of estimates by economists. The government last week approved a 2.2-trillion-dollar rescue package to help lift the economy and address the coronavirus pandemic. The US has over 200,000 cases of COVID-19, the highest in the world. It has also reported over 5,000 deaths.
