President Donald Trump says that Attorney General William Barr will step down just before Christmas and Deputy Attorney General Jeff Rosen will become acting attorney general.
The announcement was made after Barr's visit to the White House on Monday.
Barr was a staunch ally of Trump.
But there has been tension between the two over Trump's claims of election fraud and the investigation into President-elect Joe Biden's son.
