We gather this morning to remember the lives of more than 2,000 people who perished in the recent earthquake in Qinghai.
We gather as well in the hope that the more than 200 people who are still missing will be found alive.
And we gather to let the thousands who have been injured in the earthquake the tens of thousands who are today homeless know – as the President and Secretary of State have said – that America stands ready to assist.
We pray for a speedy recovery for those who are injured and we pledge our best efforts in the reconstruction efforts under way.
As Ambassador Huntsman said last Thursday, we are impressed by the speed and strength of China's response efforts and we applaud the dedication of those who are already fully engaged on the ground in Qinghai. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
In recognition of the declaration of a nationwide day of mourning, I'd like you to join me first in a minute of silence and then to remain standing as I walk over to the flagpole to place a wreath in remember all the victims of the earthquake.
Following the placement of the wreath, the marines will lower the flag to half staff.
