这是一首秋夜怀思情人的词。上片写秋夜景，或就地面刻画秋声，或就天宇描摹夜色，以寒夜秋声衬托主人公所处环境的冷寂，突出人去楼空的落寞感，并抒发了良辰美景无人与共的愁情。沈际飞《草堂诗余隽》称赏“天淡”句写景空灵。下片专就离情宣发。“愁肠”三句折进一层，言离愁之深。“残灯”二句再现实境，一盏如豆的青灯忽明忽暗，独自凭栏斜倚，尝尽这孤眠的滋味。末以离愁“眉间心上”无所不在，倍增酸楚。“都来此事”几句为李清照《一剪梅》词所袭用，化作“此情无计可消除，才下眉头，却上心头”，向来为词评家所赞誉。这首词虽写似水柔情，却骨力道劲，绝不流于软媚。李攀龙云：“月光如昼，泪深于酒，情景两到”(《草堂诗余隽》)，可谓佳评。
